Finding the Soul Name

Hello Friends,
I'm new here, but have read Elfquest since I was a wee little girl old enough to steal father's comics. I remember the day I found elfquest, I remember the moment of it exactly. A few weeks ago I found this tribe here and then started doing some random searches. I of course came across http://www.elfquest.com/ and joined there as well.

I hadn't read Elfquest for a few years, having moved out of my parent's house and left them behind (though just last week I requested they be dug out of the attic so I can take them home and properly care for them!). I re-read the only two books I have, book four of the collected edition of the original series and the first Blood of Ten Chiefs collected stories.

In doing so I realized just how much Elfquest has shaped my life. From my job (Reiki practitioner and massage therapist) to my strongest totem animal (duh, wolf, heh), to my taste in men (that long hair gets me in trouble every time!).

I also realized that I've been searching for my soul name for some time now. Anyhow! This is a long long post I'm sorry!

My point was, I'm wondering if anyone here has found a soul name. I'm not asking what it is, but if there was any particular way you went about it. I'm not about to walk someone else's path, but I would love to hear your stories for inspiration :)
thanks!!

How did you discover ElfQuest?

i was returning from a Moontribe party on Lesquiti Island in BC years ago and waiting in the small cafe by the ferry. My friend Tru, who i hadn't met yet at the time, was talking about ElfQuest (which i'd seen around in comic shops). He spoke of how it was what inspired him to think about tribe and looking after the Earth and hearing that i HAD to peep this comic out.

The color graphic novels were my intro and make for the best reading of the series tho much of it is only in black and white now unless you get the individual issues.

It's been great sharing the storyline amongst other friends who have read the story.

Elvish Unification Theme

Throughout the ElfQuest series Cutter is on this missioin to unite the elves while facing being over run by humankind. Throughout all this the elves experience both kinship and distrust of one another and often there is a period of trial, testing, conflict, competition that ensues. This seems to be my experience with real life tribe i know who are all essentially one tribe to me but acting as if they are not. I do find it very interesting, as much as frustrating. Learning how to trust and how to stay connected as diverse kinds of elves is part of the mission i feel ElfQuest is providing a way to focus upon.

I have been carefully saving my entire original elfquest series for the day that I may have a child old enough to love them. I was only 7 years old when I started reading them in 1979. It was a turning point in my young life. Well, last month I carefull unwrapped my beloved collection and started reading them to my 8 year old daughter. She LOVED them. She was so captivated and respectful and excited. In fact, she was a Go Back for Halloween! What a joy. 25 years later, to share the gift of ElfQuest with the most precious person in my world!

Recognition

I just got finished with the Elfquest book (yes, book, not graphic novel), and it got me to thinking.

Allowing recognition for a moment to be a possible reality, humans would never have it in quite the same manner elves do (for instance, we dont die), but much of what they described I recognized as a very human phenomena anyway. I know every writer draws from expereince, and that would make the base experience drawn from human in this case, but still...

...do you think humans can and/or have experienced Recognition? If so, what do you think our natural laws wih it are? How does it compare or differ to the elves?

And outside the pseudo-science qustions--have ou ever in your life experienced anything you could honestly consider recognition, or as close to it as a five finger can get?

Did Elfquest influence you to counterculture?

That's the question.
I got into Elfquest at a very young age (8) and I truly believe that reading this story helped to sway me towards somewhat counterculture/ non-Western ideals and philosophies such as taoism, paganism, polyamory, etc. by providing a society where...wait things can be like that? Why can't my life be like that?
It wasn't the only influence, but I feel it did influence me.
Anyone else agree?

I thought I was the only one addicted to this story. Elfquest has inspired me to become and artist, as well as helped me through life, I've been reading elfquest for about 10 years and have collected everything I possibly could get my hands on, from the small pewter figures to the larger actionfigures, all the games, books, and even audio recordings.

what ever happened to the movie?

Resources for elvish names?

I'm looking for a resource to create elvish names (high and dark elves) for the many hundreds of possible characters that are appearing in my story. I know about the elvish name generators at Seventh Sanctum, at the fortune city site, and the www.chriswetherell.com site, but I don't think I could use www.chriswetherell.com's names and the fortunecity name generator doesn't generate many unique names.

Any ideas on what I could do?

ElfQuest Action Figures

From Richard Pini on the ElfQuest yahoogroup..tried inviting him here before but it looks like he hasn't:(

sobey

Subject: Something you can do for EQ

Remember the Elfquest action figures? Some of you will - you read about them on
elfquest.com when we were in the midst of development and production, and some of you
even managed to get hold of them. The first series consisted of Cutter (with
Nightrunner),
Leetah (with Petalwing), Picknose (with big hat) and Tyldak (with big wings). And
then we
started hearing that maybe the quality control wasn't as good as it might have been,
and
then there were problems with getting series two (Skywise, Rayek, Guttlekraw and
Madcoil)
off the ground, and the toy thing just sort of faded.

Now Elfquest is with DC Comics - in the past two years we've produced and they've
published eight manga volumes, two Archive editions and Wendy's all-new work "Searcher
and the Sword." There's much more on the schedule for 2005 and 2006 - but I don't want
to talk about publishing here. Rather, I want to bang the drum about Elfquest toys -
again.

The good folks at DC are aware of the Elfquest series one figures, and they have made
some noises in our direction that if it's feasible, they'd like to reissue those
figures and
move on to series two and beyond. If you've bought any DC figures at all, you know
that
they don't mess around where quality is concerned - it's always top-notch. So if
they do
decide to produce the Elfquest figures, the results will be far beyond the previous
attempt.
What we have heard is that DC is going to be asking the retailers if they think
Elfquest
figures - and perhaps other merchandise - will sell well enough to warrant DC's time
and
investment.

And this is where you all come in. If Wendy or I tell DC that we'd love to see
Elfquest
figures and toys, well, of course we would! We're EQ's parents!! But if all of you,
the next
time you visit your local comics shop, drop a word or three into the ear of the
store owner
that if he or she had Elfquest toys you'd be interested... All those words are going
to filter
back to the decision-makers at DC. You're the customers - you've got the power. And
we'd
like to ask you to use it. What say you all?

Shade and sweet grass-roots,
Richard Pini

I can't believe there is a tribe dedicated to ElfQuest! I'm now officially in Heaven. (I sound like a dork don't I?) I love ElfQuest. I was raised on it. My mother started reading it before I was born. (When it first came out) and she had me hooked by the time I was 10. (I can't believe I've been reading ElfQuest for over 17Years now) I almost died when I got to meet Wendy/Richard Pini (and Brian Mckinney) I took a couple friends with me who were just starting to read the books (1-8) and they really got addicted to it after that. (Wendy/Richard/Brian were so nice; They signed my/mother's entire collection. And they even answered a few questions-Well Richard only said: "You'll See" His famous quote) If any of you ever want to just talk about ElfQuest please e-mail me: PhreakyPhroyd@aol.com (I've missed reading it so much I need to feed my addiction somehow) LOL ;-0

The first time I went to Burning Man, I was instantly reminded of The Wolfriders crossing the desert in Fire and Flight. I recently reread all the earlier books for the first time after having been, and was amazed at how similar the philosophies and lives of the wolfriders are to the burners I know and love, although I've never met another burner who I know to be an ElfQuest fan.

I'm sure there's an intersection, though. I invite any of you who are out on the playa this year to come visit The Angel Fairies From Venus in Snowflake Village (8:00 & Esplanade) for shade and sweet water and to come play with wings!

I just discovered ElfQuest (well, I've seen it in comic stores for years, but I was too busy hunting anime to think straight and grab me a truckload of EQ).

Is there a quick way to get to understand the story? I can stomach reading a million pages of text if I can get it all in front of me in one big pile (versus hunting this way and that for random EQ pages).

I'd like to get myself edumacated about Elven culture. Thanks!

perhaps a touchy subject......

I guess I am what you would call an "old school" elfquest fan. In almost all of the pictures on the tribe photos, the art looks sort of, well, tacky. The colors are way too saturated, the Elves look different, etc.
I have all of the original books. The black and whites. It was hard for me to adjust to seeing them in color in the big books, but at least it did not look like a rip-off.
PLEASE understand I don't mean any disrespect! But I am wondering if anyone in this tribe is "old school" Elfquest family to.
When the original series ended, I was a crying 11 year old girl. But I accepted it was over. And it ended so beautifully, with so much hope and positive energy. The QUEST had ended. A few years later I found some of the new series... part of me was excited but when I started reading the new story line, and trudging through the new look, I simply did not feel the same power as from the originals.... Am I alone?
Those of you who are of the new generation of fans, continue to enjoy it! I'm sure it has deep meaning for you. And I do not think it means any less to discover it in it's new form. It simply does NOT work for me. There was just something extra special to read the old black and whites with that look and even smell, that newer comics just don't have.
Shade and Sweet Water.......

Sexuality in EQ

I started reading EQ when I was quite young. Luckily, I had parents who weren't very concerned with repressing sexual imagery, but what do you guys think of the duality of sexuality in EQ? On one hand love is very intimate and personal, but then on the other the elves find pleasure with eachother in a very carefree way. Did this have any impact on the way you developed later on?

The Best of the Best List

There were a lot of philosophies and alternative ideas in the Elfquest series, some of which I was introduced to for the very first time as a child when I first got ahold of the series.

So tell me, what were your favorites? What blew your mind the most?

I must say, some of mine were:

Being so close to someone that you would consider them brother-in-all-but-blood; the image of all the different tribes united under Cutter, all touching, all doing their parts, a diversity that is healthy and benificial and, above all, ALLOWED, not threatening as it seems to be in this society; and a love so strong that on the night before you might die (as with the the first War the joined for the palace), you would count yourself so blessed and respect and love your mate so much that when an old lover is seen to be alone and she is moved by compassion, you simply let her go to them. Love without ownership blew my mind.

Anyone else want to go?

Haven't really thought of them since- maybe I'll have to go find a comic store and check 'em out...say hello to some old friends.
