How did you discover ElfQuest?

topic posted Tue, October 21, 2003 - 10:54 PM by  Sobey
i was returning from a Moontribe party on Lesquiti Island in BC years ago and waiting in the small cafe by the ferry. My friend Tru, who i hadn't met yet at the time, was talking about ElfQuest (which i'd seen around in comic shops). He spoke of how it was what inspired him to think about tribe and looking after the Earth and hearing that i HAD to peep this comic out.

The color graphic novels were my intro and make for the best reading of the series tho much of it is only in black and white now unless you get the individual issues.

It's been great sharing the storyline amongst other friends who have read the story.

I first got into it in about 1983 or something.. i was pretty into comics and i thought it was one of the coolest stories going.. i bought all the graphic novels and had the whole Marvel series.. and the following two Warp series. I stopped buying them once wendy and richard stopped doing the art though..

I even played the roleplaying game a few times and still have it along with the original colour graphic novels.

wow and i thought i was the only alive. i'm glad to run across this group. my brother bought issue #10 or #11 in '83. we fell in love with it. the story was great the art was wonderful, and it was totally DIY. we were floored.we wound up having to mail order most of the back issues from WARP, because noone carried them in the south. it was really cool though 'cause we would get neat stuff from richard and wendy every now and then. got out of it when marvel picked it up. my brother wound up gettin all of the graphic novels so he wouldn't mess up his originals. and we just discovered some of the new spin- offs, new blood and shards were pretty damn good. but then there were these really bad ones that were in space. have you seen those?

I was dissapointed when the art changed but I still bought the new stuff. I got used to it. Any way .... I love the stories. I think I started reading them in 89 or 90. I havent read them in the last six years or so.... do you know... have I missed much? I recently re-read the first 6 graphic novels and was surprised at how much it still moved me.

it was in that 1980-83 window of parents seperating and then the divorce and this was a "WOW" and the care for mother nature aspect was already heavy in my heart so it followed right in like, even the parents loved reading the graphic novel series.

not long after getting involved with the fledgling Free-Net's up here in Micvhigan did I start using a sig that was something very elfquestian.... and I still use it in my sig.

renaissance faire and being 18...best thing ever, I would just curl up in bed and read my weekends away, it felt like such a safe place to just hide in, i used to have dreams of hiding in tree hollows or holts and the only time someone hypnotized me and told me that i would "awake" in a safe place, i "awoke" in the middle of 3 wolves and curled around me and sleeping...talk about feeling beyond safe and warm, i still remember the feel of the course fur and warmth of breath and thinking this was the most amazing experience ever...sorry, a bit off topic

When I was 13....loooong ago and far away (1984), An old lover of my mom's started sending me the original balck and whites. One a month. I had never met this man, infact, he was with my mom long before I was born. But for some reason, he tracked us down and started sending them. It completely moved my life and brain around. Changed me. He sent me one a month until the original series was completed and then we never heard from him again. I remember getting the last one and not opening it for quite a while. I guess I wasn't ready for it to end. When I finished it I cried.
I still have all of them safely wrapped up and tucked away. But every now and then, I bring them out and devour them, one beautiful page at a time.
ElfQuest came to me at a tender time and has been feeding my life ever since.

My dad gave me "Book 1" when I was 8 (1983) for my birthday; I was skeptical at first, but then I wound up reading it about 20 times! For the life of me I couldn't find "Book 2," until one day 2 or 3 years later I found it in a local bookstore - I totally lost it, I was so happy.

Since then I have been a collector. I don't have everything by a long shot, but I have treated myself to a few of the choicer offerings from their Web site. It's hard to keep up with it now, though, since they stopped publishing regularly. I hope the movie comes out sooooooon!

One neat thing about it all - I met a beautiful French/Chinese woman who had read some of the original comics, translated into French. She didn't get all of them, though, so I made a good impression when I lent her my compiled editions. :)

I was about 12 or so (i'm 25 now so you do the math), and they had built a new library in my neighborhood. My best friend had checked out the first 2 graphic novels. I was hanging out at her house, and she was reading it, and completely entranced by it. I kept calling her name, and she just didn't even know I was there. So, I decided I wanted to read whatever it was she was reading. Hooked from then on, changed my whole way of thinking and greatly helped out in life, and still does. At the time, I had wanted to go into the field of animation, but when I found Elfquest, and noticed there were only 2 names on that book, unlike an animated feature that features hordes of animators who are never really appreciated. Also, a woman drew it! Changed my course of life right there, and I decided comics was a way better avenue. Ended up choosing to go to a college that had an entire major in sequential art (Savannah College of Art and Design), and am now on my way to publishing my own graphic novels. Couldn't have done it without Wendy and Richard!!

I was 15 and staying over at my friend Ron Presser's place. He was an avid comic collector and had just gotten a bunch of new issues for the week. He wanted to read them before he went to bed, and I was like "Uhhhh...hello?"

He goes through some of his books to find something for me to read. After looking a little while, he pulls out Book One and says "Here. You'll like this a lot. Trust me."

I started reading it, and didn't stop until mid-way through Book Two... when I fell asleep.j

When I woke up, I continued where I left off.

That series has helped shape who I am and how I look at the world. It's why I was comfortable with the idea of having Wendy's art tattooed on me when my ex needed skin to work on. I have a tattoo of Cutter and Nightrunner on my right shoulder.

When I was in high school, my best friends brother gave us a few comics he just got because he liked the artwork. She and I, both non-comic readers, fell in love with the story. I remember the next weekend we went on a mad comic hunt to fill in all the issues we missed. We got them all but the original #1 issue, before WARP was established and #1 was re-issued. We got that one a few years later.
EQ started me collecting various underground comics. Unfortunatly the mass of the collection was stolen a few years ago *cry, cry, cry*. But since the originals were not "comic" size, they didn't get those! :-) After the break in, I have mostly stopped getting comics, but when ever I am near a comic store I have to check in and get any WaRP issues! They are very dear to me.

    Cheers,

It was a ritual to go to the local library every sunday. I was probably 7 or 8 ('85 or so) and I saw this odd comic. I think it was issue 11, where Cutter and Skywise have returned to the Holt and meet up with Picknose. I was floored. I sprawled on the couch in the sun and read that book 10 times in a row, at least. After that I was hooked. bought all the novels as soon as I could, read the paperbacks, etc. I lost track of it as the storyline sort of splintered. I look foward to reading the new chronological series DC is releasing.

Has any other book ever been published by Marvel and DC?

I thought I was the only one in the world anymore who thought about these great comics! They had a huge impact on me growing up - passed them on to my brother - who then passed them on, etc. etc. etc. In fact, met a friends little girl who had one of the color comics in the back seat of the car, picked it up and found my name written on the inside cover - along with everyone else who had read it and passed it on. Pretty cool!

Oh, but back to the question at hand.

I came across the original black and white WARP Graphics in a little comic store in Desert Hot Springs. Nothing else to do that day with friends, it was too hot to be outside, so we went to the 'geek store' as we called it to hang out. I picked it up and started reading and stayed in the store till it closed. I still have all those original b&w's and the big novels have the covers held on with duct tape at this point. I plan to keep them around for my little boy to read. I can hardly wait for him to be in bed at night reading until his eyes are sore but can't put the book down until he knows how Cutter gets away and then falls to sleep dreaming of having a wolf-friend.

So great to find you all!

well, let's see... i have a long and interesting story. I just stumbled across this tribe and thought... wow! there are others out there. So when I was in 3rd grade or so, my godfather bought me the first full color graphic novel. I then collected the next few and became a big fan. Then I heard about a possible EQ movie in the works. Since my father was working in the computer graphics entertainment industry at the time, I thought that introducing the Pinis to some people in the 3D graphics industry would be very cool. Of course, like many things, the whole idea never panned out, but seeing motion capture actors pretending to be Cutter in the trial of heart was too cool for words, especially when my dad did the initial demonstration. We even got to the point of doing a 3D render test of cutter as a CG character, but, like many ideas in hollywood, the plans eventually flushed out. I don't know if it's still there, but the render test was on the elfquest website. After that, I became a rabid collector and now have two whole bookshelves dedicated to elfquest.

I've tapered off recently because the bound collections aren't in that beautiful color anymore, but I appreciate the fact that those were extremely hard to make.

and i still go by my EQ avatar everywhere online... brookswift. no one else seems to get it :)

i was in 8th grade and me and my friends played DnD and one of them said "you always play an elf, have you ever read elfquest?" and when i said no, she gave me her raggity-ass graphic novel, pages falling out of it, stained with coffee, and i fell in love....

My cousin gave me the first three issues of the original black and white series. I fell in love with them and read them over and over. It was several months before I realized the series had been out for awhile and I could actually find out what happened next.

I have the entire original series boxed up and bought them again as graphic novels just to have them around for reading.

When I was little my older cousin was very into ElfQuest. She could draw them all and got into the "lore" of it as well. We used to "play" ElfQuest in the woods by my grandmother's house.

I grew up on this stuff. So nice to see that it rocked other peoples' worlds as it did mine!

the first issue of the marvel epic reprint of the original series was in the comic rack in the 7-11 in my home town. i'd seen ads for it in epic illustrated, liked the look of it, so i grabbed a slurpee and the comic and walked home reading it.

by the time i reached the last page i was hooked (i even found my eyes watering when the holt burned). i was the only fan in my town until a few years later, and i didn't meet any others until i moved to the west coast and found communities where elfquest seems to be as ubiquitous as dr. seuss or stephen king.

    SEE: Oh My Gawd-

I've been reading for at least 17 Years. I've got a legion of followers hooked on it. (Thanks to Jr/High School) I'm the only one of my group that kept seriously reading after High school and I kind of lost touch with many of the fans I knew. I'ts nice to see that ElfQuest has a large enough following to create a tribe (Holt). Technology is good sometimes-I guess.

My dad bought me Book 1 (graphic novel) when I was 7 ('82), and I never found the later books until I was 10 or 11, but I'll tell you - I was SUPER excited when I found them! So I guess I've been a fan for 22 years. Man I'm old! :)

Later I started collecting comics, so I managed to find 1st editions of all the original mags EXCEPT #1 (I've got the second print on that).

My biggest regret in life (and I mean this seriously) is that I had a copy of Fantasy Quarterly #1 in my hands one day, priced at $15, and I DIDN'T buy it, thinking that I should be able to find it again later whenever I wanted. Last time I checked, it's worth $75 and nowhere to be found. Argghhhhhhh.....!

Wow, this goes back to 1985. I was in high school and meet a freshman who was into Dr. Who like I was and we struck a friendship. She gave me the "Wolfriders Reflections" filk tape saying that I would enjoy the music. I did enjoy the music but I really didn't understand who the songs were about. My friend gave me her copies of Elfquest to read and I was hooked immediately. 20 years later I still read them.

A couple of years ago actually. I don't even remember how I came across the webpage (propably something pagan related). Anyway, I read all the online stuff and was just fasinated by the colors and characters. Wolf rider clan appeals to me most-that living in harmony with the forest despite what goes on. Eventually when I hit the comic book store again, I'll look up Elfquest were normally I'm looking at manga and such.

I even did some AU fan fiction solely using Cutter's clan :)

I was 8 years old and into comics (circa 1983). My brother got elfquest and I managed to steal ALL of them from him. Finally, my parents bought me the color graphic novels, which I still have although they're falling apart.
          I love them!
I agree that I'll pass on the futurama stuff, too. I also miss all the original wedy Pini art, the new comics look kinda freaky sometimes.

I was in my teens, and my mother (poosibly one of the worst, though well meaning gift givers in the world) got me this HUGE hardback graphic novel for Christmas. I looked at it and realized it was a comic book, and having long since become way too cool for books that had pictures in them, thanked her and put it in a corner of my room to rot. Didnt touch it for at least a year. To this day I'm not sure what finally drove me to read it, boredom or fate or just got to looking at the nice artwork, but by the end of the novel I was fatally hooked.

I had always lived my life in this miserable state where I believed a bunch of stuff that the small town christian mentality that saturated my area didnt agree with, and I always thought something was wrong with me. Then here was this book that not only contained many of the ideas I had long held, but actually had NEW ones for me to think about, and this thing had been around since the '70s. It was like there was suddenly life out there.

I was just out of high school and life wasn't very fun yet. I would spend a lot of time at the library and one day I discovered the old Starblaze version of the graphic novels. Only the first four books had come out yet. I would hole up in my room and read them over and over while listening to Depeche Mode (which now reminds me of ElfQuest whenever I hear anything from Black Celebration or earlier).
The stories really touched me and felt like they had so much emotion and substance. I never got into any other comics. I plan to make sure I have the graphic novels and will share them with my kid in the future.

At age 15 I worked at a Comic Book SciFantasy store. Elfquest came out then and we had the Pini's in for book signings. They came off a bit odd but that could have been from traveling so much and general tiredness. I loved the series though and still have my first books and comics. I have a lot of catch up to do though.

i discovered elfquest in my school library around grade 5 or 6 and became lost in the fantasy of the elves that might be living in the woods surrounding my house. Over a few years, i got a few people hooked on reading the books. Some went 'mysteriously' missing from the school library, and i had to read them otherplaces once i got older.

I have now re-read the series MANY times but for some reason have always missed 'the secret of two-edge' volume 6.
Maybe ive read it, but cant remember it like all the other books...

Me and Elfquest go waaaaay back to 1982. That summer I was 16 in Long Beach California, walking to the beach when I pass by the HiDiHo Comic Book store. I saw the first issue and it was love at first howl. Been a follower of the Way ever since...and have to admit I had a huge crush on Cutter and Skywise. People would look at me funny in high school when I'd reply to things with "Well sun bless me!" and "Bristle burrs and prickle ears, keep it down will ya?" I appreciate the Elves now because they remind me of a combination of the Hobbits, the Humans and a little of the Elves from Lord of the Rings. Of course, the Elves in LOTR are more like the High Ones...

It's sad that we don't also have a Tribe for Distant Soil, another one of my obsessions. Anybody wanna create one? If not, I will.

My father is an avid collector of comics. I grew up with all the old classics. When he was younger he had all the original Marvel and DC comics.. like #1s of everything.. Batman, Spiderman, X-men, Conan, Thor.. everything...when he was in the service my Babchi threw them all away because 'they were dirty'. Can you believe it?

In any case. I was raised with a reverance and awe for comics and their stories. Elfquest was one that my father collected and I devoured them. They were the second printing, colors, and I loved them. I didn't even realize until last year when I picked them up again how much Elfquest had shaped my life.

my sisater had the full series in hard cover back in the early 80's. we lived out in the country when I started reading them. We had this huge old tree in the yard that I would sit in while i read for hours. when i would finish a book i could imagine the wolfriders living theor around me ( i was like 7-9 years old). then when i was 11 my new found best friend and i spent a whole summer coming up with our own tribe. fond fond memories. :)

    Ok here goes
The summer before 8th grade a friend came home from vacation with the first four graphic novels. She passed them around to all of us. But she couldnt keep them at her house. For some reason her parents thought they were satanic or something. So she entrusted them all to my care. We all started collecting them from that point. Even started our own little tribe, heh. Which kind of grew out of proportion in High School. One by one the books disappeared, tho. The only one I have left is Seige at Blue Mountain. My kids are urging me to start collecting them again. I'm already excited!
